For carbon steel castings ordered to ASTM A216 WCB, that means checking carbon, manganese, silicon, and sulfur against the standard\u2019s composition limits. Visual inspection catches surface discontinuities \u2014 shrinkage, porosity, cracks, sand inclusions. But surface appearance alone can be misleading. I have worked with castings where surface porosity passed visual inspection with no issues, then machining exposed interconnected pores that created leak paths in a pressure-containing application. That failure did not show up until the part was installed. Liquid penetrant testing (PT) detects surface-breaking discontinuities with high sensitivity on non-porous materials. It works on any alloy but only finds defects that reach the surface. Magnetic particle testing (MT) goes one step further: it catches both surface and near-subsurface indications, but it is limited to ferromagnetic materials only. You cannot use MT on austenitic stainless steels or nickel alloys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">M\u00e9thodes volum\u00e9triques<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Radiographic testing (RT) and ultrasonic testing (UT) look inside the casting. RT is the most reliable volumetric method for sand castings \u2014 it produces a permanent film record showing internal shrinkage, porosity, and inclusions. On a nuclear-service impeller project, 120 X-ray views across three 2,500-pound castings found only one rejectable indication. Fine-grained alloys like 400-series martensitic stainless give reliable UT results. Coarse-grained alloys \u2014 300-series austenitic stainless, duplex, nickel-based \u2014 scatter the ultrasonic beam and produce unreliable readings. Before you specify UT on an austenitic casting, confirm with your supplier that the alloy\u2019s microstructure supports it. Otherwise, you are paying for an inspection that cannot deliver what you need. RT is the better volumetric choice for coarse-grained castings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comment r\u00e9diger des crit\u00e8res d'acceptation dans un bon de commande<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sp\u00e9cifier une m\u00e9thode de CND sans sp\u00e9cifier de crit\u00e8res d'acceptation, c'est comme commander une pi\u00e8ce sans tol\u00e9rances. You, the buyer, select the maximum severity level acceptable for your application. A severity level 2 for shrinkage on a general industrial bracket is reasonable. That same level on a pressure-containing valve body might be too permissive. The key detail most buyers miss: this is your decision to make, not the foundry\u2019s. If your PO says \u201cRT per ASTM E446\u201d without specifying the severity level, the foundry decides what passes \u2014 and their economic incentive runs opposite to yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Normes d'acceptation de surface<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>L'ASTM A802 fournit un ensemble de 31 planches de comparateurs SCRATA montrant divers degr\u00e9s de discontinuit\u00e9s de surface \u2014 porosit\u00e9, retassures, veinures, et plus encore. Instead of visual comparison against photographs, A903 sets out specific dimensions and frequencies of indications as acceptance criteria for MT and PT results. If you need objective, measurable acceptance decisions \u2014 especially when multiple inspectors or multiple foundries are producing the same part \u2014 A903 removes the judgment variable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Porosity in sand castings is inherent to the process. Demanding zero porosity is both unrealistic and cost-prohibitive. The specification question is not whether porosity exists but what level is acceptable for your application\u2019s functional requirements. A structural support bracket tolerates far more porosity than a hydraulic manifold \u2014 specify accordingly, or you pay for inspection rigor your application does not need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comment faire correspondre l'intensit\u00e9 de l'inspection \u00e0 la criticit\u00e9 de l'application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Toutes les pi\u00e8ces moul\u00e9es n'ont pas besoin de la m\u00eame rigueur d'inspection, et les traiter de mani\u00e8re identique est l'une des erreurs de sp\u00e9cification les plus co\u00fbteuses que je vois. Avant votre demande de devis, d\u00e9finissez vos exigences de qualit\u00e9 sur papier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pi\u00e8ces moul\u00e9es industrielles g\u00e9n\u00e9rales<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Supports, contrepoids, couvercles non structuraux. L'inspection visuelle selon ASTM A802 avec des niveaux de s\u00e9v\u00e9rit\u00e9 convenus est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement suffisante. Ajouter un RT ou un UT \u00e0 un contrepoids double votre co\u00fbt d'inspection sans am\u00e9lioration significative de la qualit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pi\u00e8ces moul\u00e9es structurelles et portantes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>B\u00e2ti de machines, supports sous charge cyclique, mat\u00e9riel de levage. Sp\u00e9cifiez le MT ou le PT pour les d\u00e9fauts de surface et de proche sous-surface, ainsi qu'une v\u00e9rification dimensionnelle par rapport \u00e0 vos tol\u00e9rances de dessin. Le RT peut \u00eatre justifi\u00e9 pour les sections critiques, mais une couverture volum\u00e9trique \u00e0 100% est rarement justifi\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pi\u00e8ces moul\u00e9es sous pression<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Corps de vannes, carters de pompes, composants hydrauliques. Le RT avec des niveaux de s\u00e9v\u00e9rit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cifi\u00e9s selon E446\/E186\/E280 est la norme. Exigez des essais de pression ou de fuite comme acceptation finale. C'est l\u00e0 que la sous-sp\u00e9cification de l'inspection cr\u00e9e la plus grande responsabilit\u00e9 \u2014 la porosit\u00e9 qui passe l'inspection visuelle peut s'interconnecter apr\u00e8s usinage, cr\u00e9ant des chemins de fuite qui n'apparaissent qu'en service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pi\u00e8ces moul\u00e9es de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 critique<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nuclear, aerospace, high-consequence applications. Multi-stage NDT sequences \u2014 VT, then RT with full coverage, then UT, then PT or MT, with weld repair procedures and post-weld heat treatment between stages. A 2,500-pound nuclear impeller goes through exactly this sequence. First, define criticality: what happens if this casting fails in service? A production delay, a safety incident, or a cosmetic defect each demand different inspection intensity. Second, select your NDT methods based on defect type and alloy \u2014 do not default to \u201c100% everything\u201d or \u201cvisual only.\u201d Third, write specific acceptance standards and severity levels into the PO, referencing the ASTM standard number and your maximum allowable severity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les \u00e9quipes achats qui ma\u00eetrisent la qualit\u00e9 des pi\u00e8ces moul\u00e9es ne sont pas celles qui sp\u00e9cifient le plus d'inspections.
