Also known as nodular iron, custom ductile iron castings bridge the gap between traditional gray iron and cast steel. Thanks to its unique spherical graphite structure, ductile iron offers exceptional tensile strength, remarkable ductility, and superior impact resistance—without sacrificing castability.
At Kurt Foundry, our advanced resin sand casting process allows us to produce medium to large-scale ductile iron components. It is the ideal material choice for heavy-duty components where weight reduction, excellent machinability, and lower production costs are required compared to carbon steel.

Our Ductile Iron Sand Casting Process
Producing high-quality ductile iron requires exact control over the nodularization process to guarantee structural integrity.
1. Casting Simulation
We apply advanced DFM and 3D simulation to engineer precise gating systems, ensuring smooth flow and preventing shrinkage defects.
2. Resin Sand Molding
Using high-grade resin sand, we produce exceptionally rigid molds that maintain tight dimensional tolerances for heavy iron castings.
3. Magnesium Treatment
The crucial nodularization step: controlled magnesium alloy is introduced to the molten iron to transform graphite flakes into solid spheres.
4. Spectrometric Analysis
Before every pour, thermal analysis and spectrometry confirm the exact carbon equivalent and nodularity rate to meet ASTM specifications.
5. CNC Machining & QC
Castings are shot-blasted, fully CNC machined in-house, and pass strict quality checks including UT and dimensional inspections.

Ductile Iron Casting FAQs
The primary difference lies in the graphite structure. Gray iron has graphite flakes, making it brittle but good at dampening vibration. Ductile iron is treated with magnesium to form spherical (nodular) graphite, which gives it much higher tensile strength, impact resistance, and ductility (the ability to bend without breaking).
In many cases, yes. Ductile iron offers a yield strength comparable to many cast carbon steels but is easier to cast and machine, resulting in a lower overall part cost. It is an excellent upgrade for parts that are too stressed for gray iron but don’t strictly require the weldability of carbon steel.
Our sand foundry is equipped to handle custom ductile iron components ranging from 50 lbs up to 5,000 lbs (2.5 tons) per single piece, making us ideal for heavy machinery components.
Ductile iron has excellent machinability, generally superior to carbon steel of equivalent hardness. The graphite nodules act as a natural lubricant during the cutting process, which extends tool life and allows for faster machining speeds.
We maintain rigorous quality control. We perform pre-pour spectrometric analysis, thermal analysis to check nodularity, and post-pour mechanical testing (tensile/yield/elongation). We also offer ultrasonic testing (UT) to ensure internal soundness.
Yes, Kurt Foundry provides fully integrated manufacturing. We cast the ductile iron parts and utilize our in-house 5-axis CNC machining centers to drill, mill, bore, and turn the castings so they are ready for immediate assembly upon delivery.
